That’s Japanese Style Coffee Jelly for you—a dessert that has charmed its way into the hearts of many. Its origins can be traced back to the Taisho era, where it began as a Western-inspired treat and evolved into a quintessential Japanese dessert.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 packet unflavored gelatin (Knox brand)
  • 2 Tbsps warm water
  • 2 cups freshly brewed coffee
  • 2 Tbsps sugar (or to taste)
  • Toppings – Half and half, whipped cream, condensed milk or vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Soften gelatin in 2 Tbsps warm water in bowl.
  2. Add hot coffee, stirring until gelatin dissolves.
  3. Add sugar, stir until it dissolves.
  4. Pour 1/2 cup of mixture into 4-6 dessert glasses or ramekins.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and chill until set.
  6. Serve with desired toppings!

Notes

If you don’t have fresh coffee (from ground beans), you can also use 3-4 tsps instant coffee in 2 cups hot water.
