Really, they should germinate at over 50%, so I'm going to try starting some more with a presoak in 3% hydrogen peroxide (plain water would probably do), then started under a clear lid in moderate conditions, with an occasional spray of fungicide.
Anyway if you get even one or two to grow, unless you were planning to grow shiso commercially, you'll have as much as you can use, and possibly a problem down the road, as this is yet another aggressively invasive mint that you'll not struggle to have enough of.
Note: Shiso/perilla is (quite!) toxic to cattle and other livestock, even goats and horses, so don't get it in your pasture or your neighbor's. It shouldn't bother your cats and dogs though.
Two issues with my order experience :
- The 2-pack come with a larger envelope containing Green and Red Shiso seeds. The Green Shiso seed pack was torn open, so the seeds were just sitting in the larger envelope and some of the seeds fell out and were scattered inside the Amazon delivery box. Although, what I was able to plant, the Green Shiso seeds did sprout. Around 80% germination.
- The Red Shiso seeds were sealed, but had 0% germination. I tried to plant these in three different conditions, all of the seeds did not sprout. Direct seeding, in seed pots, indoors w/ heat pad and lamp…all with no success.
